About the Programme|

MSc in Applied Mathematics develops the core mathematical skills required to carry out research in various areas of applied mathematics and allows students to specialise through choice of taught courses and the writing of a research thesis. The latter can be carried out with an industrial sponsor. The graduates’ areas of specialization are broad enough to carry out research, participate in national and executive arms of public and private enterprises.
The programme shall be offered by: course work, supervised research project or thesis and examination.
The programme offers the following options: one may opt to take a project or thesis via one of the following pathways:  
Thesis pathway: MSc by coursework and thesis
Year 1 Semester 1:   4 core units and 2 elective units.
Year 1 Semester 2:  1 core unit, 1 core unit of thesis work and a minimum of 4 elective units
Year 2 Semester 1:  3 units of thesis work.
Year 2 Semester 2:  3 units of thesis work.

Project pathway: MSc by coursework and research project
Year 1 Semester 1: 4 core units and a minimum of 2 elective units.
Year 1 Semester 2: 3 core units and a minimum of 2 elective units
Year 2 Semester 1: 1 core unit of research project and a minimum of 3 elective units
Year 2 Semester 2:  3 core units of research project.
Objectives    
The MSc programme in Applied Mathematics is designed to produce graduates who can:
i.    Apply critical thinking and communication skills to solve applied problems.
ii.    Use knowledge and skills necessary for immediate employment or acceptance into a graduate program.
iii.    Maintain a core of mathematical and technical knowledge that is adaptable to changing technologies and provides a solid foundation for future learning.

Programme Requirements

Admission Requirements

Applicants eligible for admission into the program must:
•    Common regulations for the Master degree in Maseno University and School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science shall apply.
•    Candidates must have taken Mathematics as a major subject in their Bachelor’s degree.
•    Holders of a Bachelor’s degree of Maseno University in Mathematical Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Economics or Mathematics and Business Studies, of at least Upper Second Class Honours, or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Senate.
•    Holders of a Bachelor’s degree of Maseno University in Mathematical Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Economics or Mathematics and Business Studies, of Lower Second Class Honours, or an equivalent qualification from another institution recognized by Senate. In addition, a candidate must have at least two years relevant work experience.


Duration of the Programme
The duration of the program shall normally be two (2) academic years.
Teaching methods in all units shall include lectures, seminars, tutorials, discussions. There shall be a thesis or report at the end of the course.


Degree Structure
The program offers courses within the degree structure spelled out by the Faculty.

Course Structure
•    The Department offers courses in terms of units as defined by the faculty.
•    There shall be CORE and ELECTIVE courses. Core courses are mandatory, while Elective courses may be chosen by students as preferred in fulfilling the full-time load requirement.
•    There shall be a thesis or project report at the end of the second year.
